El actor canario Edu Díaz debutará en Nueva York con el espectáculo ‘Fantastic Mr. S’ ‘Fantastic Mr. S’ se estrenará el 27 de octubre en Nueva York tras ser seleccionado en el Festival United Solo, el más importante del mundo en la categoría de monólogos. El espectáculo, basado en las vivencias del actor en su Tenerife natal, está coproducido por Susan Batson y dirigido por Carl Ford, maestros de actores ganadores de Óscars. El actor y productor tinerfeño Edu Díaz estrenará el espectáculo 'Fantastic Mr. S' el 27 de octubre de 2022 en el ‘United Solo Festival’ de Nueva York, uno de los más prestigiosos del mundo y el más importante en la categoría de espectáculos unipersonales. El espectáculo con el que Edu Díaz debuta en Estados Unidos, está coproducido por Susan Batson y dirigido por Carl Ford, coaches de artistas reconocidas como Nicole Kidman, Juliette Binoche o Lady Gaga, con los que el actor comenzó a estudiar en 2019 al obtener la beca Fulbright del Ministerio de Cultura español. ‘Fantastic Mr. S.’ está basado en las vivencias familiares del artista en las Islas Canarias y aborda la depresión severa y el duelo. Se presenta como una tragicomedia en forma de fábula expresionista que narra el viaje accidental de Simón Santacruz, también conocido como Mr. S, a una isla sombría e inquietante. Aunque el proyecto comenzó a gestarse en 2019 en la escuela de Batson, la pandemia dio lugar a su desarrollo innovador vía Zoom, primero desde un apartamento en Nueva York y luego desde un garaje convertido en teatro en La Laguna (Tenerife). La etapa en Tenerife fue fundamental para la narración, que se desarrolla en una versión distorsionada de la isla inspirada en los universos artísticos de los canarios Óscar Domínguez, María Belén Morales (abuela del creador) o Carmen Cólogan. Edu Díaz está de vuelta en Nueva York con un visado de Habilidades Extraordinarias del Gobierno de los EEUU. La técnica de Susan Batson es la responsable de éxitos de artistas multi premiados como Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise y, más recientemente, Lady Gaga, y sitúa al artista en una zona de descubrimiento, revelación y autenticidad. ExEr Actor significa ‘ejercita a tu actor/actriz’ y es la puerta de entrada a la técnica Susan Batson. En una sola sesión práctica se dan a conocer los conceptos más destacados de la técnica de una manera dinámica, efectiva y emocionante, dando a artistas una herramienta útil para abordar cualquier reto actoral. La sesión se compone de cuatro partes: conciencia , movimiento , preparación emocional y monólogo , en el que los estudiantes pondrán en práctica lo ejercitado a través de un texto que se prepara y defiende sobre la marcha. Edu Díaz es actor y productor teatral nacido en Tenerife. En 2019 ganó la prestigiosa beca Fulbright en artes escénicas que lo llevó a Nueva York y a estudiar en Susan Batson Studio, con quienes desarrolla su próximo proyecto teatral. September 2019. I had received the Fulbright grant a few weeks ago. I was interviewed by Daniel Galindo , the voice of La Sala , the performing arts program of reference in Spain , broadcasted by the Spanish public radio station (Radio Nacional de España). I usually enjoy interviews, but this one was different, and I could feel the vertigo of the closeness of the adventure. Then, Galindo asked a reasonable question: what are you going to do in New York? I got frozen. With a shaky voice, I got to say aloud, for the very first time, what you can listen to on the video above. And I'm doing so. More than autobiographical, this play is an exorcism.

Let's be honest. I'm not too fond of Zoom. And for many months, I was sure it was incompatible with any form of art. But when I had to leave the USA and was awarded a scholarship from the Susan Batson Studio to keep developing my show, I had to jump through hoops. At this point in the game, we all know the disadvantages of working on Zoom. What about the advantages? This week I'm moderately optimistic, and I thought about seven good things about developing my show via Zoom: I perform in class in front of Carl Ford, Susan Batson and fellow students from all over the world. Feedback rounds are priceless, especially for a solo play like mine. I rehearse live to feel that emotion -and characteristic sweat- of theater and learning improv skills, especially when everything goes wrong. Rehearsals are recorded. That gives me the possibility of rewatching and learning from my mistakes. I also record every meeting with Carl Ford (Susan Batson Studio's Director) , and going through our conversations is a valuable habit. As an actor, the fact of playing in front of a camera is excellent training. I can show those recordings to collaborators, friends, or potential producers. In April 2021, I abruptly left New York after my Fulbright scholarship (and my student visa) ended. Leaving the city without committing to the essential goal that brought me to the USA -to develop and premiere my one-person show- was traumatic. Plus, I didn't want to come back home and meet my ghosts once again. However, I let it flow with the help of my family, friends, and my therapist. Of course, I didn't give up on the creation of the play. But obviously, destiny had other ways for me to do it. Well, let me tell you that some exciting stuff is happening. First thing, I rant a house with an oversized garage nobody was using. I was initially hesitant, but my friend María opened my eyes; that location was THE PLACE where I would be developing my play. It took weeks before I made it comfortable, but THE GARAGE is now my favorite place on Earth. At least, I spend many hours a day rehearsing and connected, vía Zoom, with Carl Ford and Susan Batson (Susan Batson Studio). They supervise and direct the show's development from New York. THE GARAGE is another character of this process. Even when it is unanimated, it has had an intense arch in this story. And sometimes I think it has even a mood. What is clear is that it is a sacred space and part of this fascinating process.

As an only child, I am used to make everything since I was a little kid. This process of creating my one-man show is not an exception. I'm hogging the whole thing, including the stage design, because I'm so clear about what I want and because the circumstances push me to do it. But I'm also SUPER clear that I can't wait until I hire the right professionals. Como hijo único, estoy acostumbrado a hacer todo desde que era pequeño. Este proceso de creación de mi espectáculo no es una excepción. Estoy acaparando todo, incluida la escenografía, porque tengo muy claro lo que quiero y porque las circunstancias me empujan a hacerlo. Pero también tengo SUPER claro que no puedo esperar a contratar a los profesionales adecuados.
